CD135: Duos for Cello and Bass. COENRAAD
BLOEMENDAL, CELLO; JOEL QUARRINGTON, BASS.
Gioacchino Rossini, Duetto for Cello and
Bass; Luigi Boccherini, Sonata in Bb; Franz Joseph Keyper, Rondo Solo for Bass;
Jacques Offenbach, Duo for Cello and Bass; Jules Massenet, Duo for Bass and
Cello; Charles Nicolas Baudiot, Theme and Variations; Don Thompson, In Memory
of Glenn (Duo for Cello and Bass).
Joel Quarrington is probably the best-known soloist on the string
bass in North America and probably the world. He was principal bass with the
Toronto Symphony from 1991 to 2006, and is presently
principal bass with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. He has
performed solos throughout the world and performed with many of the world’s
leading string quartets. Coenraad Bloemendal has performed solos with
orchestras through Canada and plays with some of the best chamber ensembles in
Canada. This CD presents duos by well-known names from the classical period as
well as the world premiere recording (and performance) of a piece, based on
themes by Bach, written especially for the duo by renowned award-winning
composer and jazz bassist Don Thompson. The name “In Memory of Glenn” refers to
Glenn Gould, with whom Bloemendal, Quarrington, and Thompson worked frequently.
They were involved in the last recording that Glenn Gould did before his death.

Carol Rodland, one of the world’s finest violists, teaches at
Eastman School of Music, and previously at the New England Conservatory of
Music and The Juilliard School. She has three CDs on Crystal. Fanfare Magazine has written “Rodland’s
tone is larger than life, sweetly in tune, and infinitely variegated.” Scott Kluksdahl
teaches at the University of South Florida. He has performed and recorded with
the Lions Gate Trio for 20 years and is currently a member of the Veronika
String Quartet. Strings Magazine has called him “a
simply superb cellist, playing with consummate technical ease, a beautiful
sound, total conviction, authority and dedication to the music.” “Bartók’s Duos
are played here with love and beauty of tone.” (American Record Guide)
“These
little masterpieces ...appear simple on the surface but their folksy content
requires nuanced treatment, which they receive in abundance in Rodland and
Kluksdahl’s thoughtful and buoyant performances.” Gramophone
(Donald Rosenberg)
