Carolyn
Hove has been solo English horn with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1988.
This is her third solo recording on Crystal Records. All have met great
critical acclaim. “Carolyn Hove is probably
the greatist English hornist in the world today. Not only is her tone as large,
liquid, and sensuous as they come, but she plays with a finess, agility, and
all-encompassing musical intelligence that make her one of the most completely
satisfying musicians of our time.” Jim Svejda, KUSC Radio.

Bhavani Kotha is a winner
of the Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition and the National Federation
of Musicians Double Reed Award. She played the Strauss Oboe Concerto on a tour
of Europe, where the Gottingen Kulturbüro wrote of her “musicality and great
technical abilities.” These
qualities are shown on the wonderful works on this CD, which require the
highest musicianship. Peter Christ, president of Crystal Records and
founder/oboist of the Westwood Wind Quintet, said of Bhavani: “As
a professional oboist for over 65 years, I am not easily impressed with an
oboist. But impressed I am with Bhavani Kotha. Her playing on this CD is
spectacular and the choice of repertoire is wonderful.”
“Bhavani Kotha is a phenomenal oboist, able to make her
instrument purr like a clarinet or ring out brazenly like a
trumpet.” Fanfare
Magazine (James H. North)
“Bhavani
Kotha shines…she takes listeners on a musical journey that is both exciting and
calming, and it is a joy to become absorbed in her playing. Her mastery of the
oboe in all registers is noteworthy.” The

Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida,
William Caballero, and Rodrigo Ojeda
are Principal Oboe, Horn, and
Piano with the Pittsburgh Symphony, positions they have held since 1991,
1989, and 2006, respectively. All have been featured frequently as soloists.
Fanfare Magazine has called
Cynthia DeAlmeida “hands down, one of the best oboe players in the world”.
Gramophone magazine wrote, “Pittsburgh’s first horn (William Caballero)
is as spectacular as any on disc.”
“a unique chamber CD…refined individual playing and
stunning tonal blend between the oboe and horn…the three are extremely well-matched
in style and create a playful dialogue reminiscent of Mozart’s operas. Hearing
these masterful musicians perform Mozart is a delight. While every track on the
album is a gem, two other stand-out performances are the newly-commissioned
works depicting bodies of water: Chris Massa’s “Scenes from Lake Chautauqua,”
(2020) and Eric Ewazen’s “Three Rivers Trio” (2023). The “Barn Dance” movement
in Massa’s piece is particularly fun, with playful rustic rhythms laid down by
the horn and piano. Above the rhythmic background, triumphant horn lines ascend and the sensual tone of the oboe joins in a
countermelody.
“DeAlmeida, Caballero, and Ojeda have
produced a joyful and optimistic album featuring classic and tonal contemporary
works. On a deeper level Three Rivers Trios it is a beautiful celebration of
partnership.” IDRS “The
Double Reed” Journal, Issue 47-3, Fall 2024, reviewed by Meghan /Woodard.
Three Rivers Trios:
The title of this album and Eric Ewazen’s piece are a tribute to the city
of Pittsburgh, where the Allegheny River and Monongahela River converge to form
the Ohio River. The photograph on the cover is of the three soloists on Mt.
Washington overlooking downtown Pittsburgh.

performing group for 18 years until the death in 2008 of its leader and founder
Mark Weiger. These seven gems come from the group’s research library of over
500 pieces. The first Crystal release by Wizards! elicited the comment from
Fanfare Magazine: “Miraculous playing…magic
abounds.” The magic still abounds in this one. The core group is
Mark Weiger, oboe; Andrea Gullickson, oboe d’amore; S. Blake Duncan, English
horn; and Greg Morton, bassoon. On some of the pieces they are joined by Jack
