James Dunham was violist with the Grammy Award winning Cleveland Quartet. He presently teaches at the Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas. Cynthia Koledo DeAlmeida has been principal oboe with the Pittsburgh Symphony since 1991. All the players on this CD are or were principals in the Pittsburgh Symphony. Noah Bendix-Balgley was recently appointed First Concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic. DeAlmeida was called “hands down one of the best players in the world” in a review in the American Record Guide of her first Crystal solo CD.

This is Yizhak Schotten's fifth CD on Crystal Records. He has been called “one of America's finest string players” by STRAD Magazine.  Schotten is formerly principal viola of the Houston and Cincinnati Symphonies, and a member of the Boston Symphony. He is one of the most respected violists in the world. He now teaches at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This is one of the only available recordings of the beautiful Suite by Vaughan Williams, and is the only recording of the Variations by Michael Colgrass.

Shostakovitch’s Viola Sonata was written just before his death, inspiring Khachaturian to write his Solo Sonata just months later. Bacewicz’ last published work was a viola concerto, and Martinu returned to the viola near the end of his life. The music on this CD are profound works, possibly among the most moving pieces ever written by these composers.
Paul Cortese has been principal viola with the Gothenburg Symphony with Neeme Jarvi conducting. He has been guest principal in over a dozen European orchestras and is featured chamber player in numerous worldwide festivals. This is his third CD on Crystal Records. The American Record Guide said his “performances are elegant. The technique of Cortese is superb.”
