“fabulously rich, warm instrument
played by an expert violinist.” International Record Review
The
Violin Sonatas by Copland and Ives are standards in the literature, with their
beauty and Americana elements. Lowndes Maury was a respected and active
composer for films and TV shows. His Sonata is a powerful statement about the
tragedy of war.
Myron Sandler founded and was first
violinist with the Mallory String Quartet, which toured Europe and the United
States. He was a prominent movie studio violinist in Los
Angeles, and taught at California State University Northridge for over
30 years.

Two of the most vibrant and important violin sonatas in history, played by Sidney Weiss, who has had a long
career as concertmaster of major symphony orchestras, including the Chicago
Symphony (1967-1972), the Monte Carlo Philharmonic (1973-1979), and the Los
Angeles Philharmonic (1979-1994).
“The Kreutzer Sonata has all the ingredients of a
first-rate performance: the Adagio opens with a blazing cadenza...the ensuing
Presto possesses demonic propulsion and stylized glamour. Even more impressive
is their Andante con Variazioni movement...the
intrinsic balance, bravura technique, and poetic expression. The buoyant energy
of the ensemble and its realization of Beethoven’s unfettered spirit make this
a rendition to treasure. This disc presents old wine refreshed enough to
convince even the most "hardened" veteran that these works can still
generate sincere passion" Audiophile Audition
The Weiss Duo has performed extensively in the United States and
Europe. They have three other acclaimed CDs on Crystal: CD633: Elgar, Walton,
and Strauss Sonatas; CD511: Mendelssohn and Haydn Concertos for Violin, Piano,
and Orchestra; and CD835: works by Chausson, Leclair,
and Debussy.

Sidney
Weiss has had a long career as concertmaster of major symphony orchestras: the
Chicago Symphony (1967 to 1972), the Monte Carlo Philharmonic (1973 to 1979)
and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1979 to 1994). This is a first-time release
of a concert recorded in 1968. The Prokofiev Sonatas have become standards in
the violin repertoire and we believe these recordings, with their excellent
digital remastering, stand up well to any other recordings of these works.
The Weiss Duo has four other acclaimed CDs on Crystal: CD633:
Elgar, Walton, and Strauss Sonatas; CD511: Mendelssohn and Haydn Concertos for
Violin, Piano, and Orchestra; CD835: works by Chausson, Leclair,

“The
Weiss Duo is, in my opinion, an absolutely first-class
team. Both as an ensemble and as soloists, they combine sensitive musicianship
with fine technique.” – Sir Georg Solti.
